It was one of the last 356A to leave the factory on September 4th, 1959. Even today it stands unchanged in our halls, in the same configuration as it came from the factory: exterior color ivory, interior imitation leather red, seats leather red. Special equipment: USA bumpers, 1 exterior mirror, Michelin tires. The engine and gearbox are original (matching numbers).
We had our first contact with this car in 2012 – it appeared on an eBay auction with a short and concise description:
“1959 Porsche 356A Coupe, one meticulous owner, solid original floors, arrow-straight original body. Garaged since new, maintained to the highest degree of excellence. Owned since new by a career airforce fighter pilot (now retired) who loved his car. No accidents whatsoever.”
The original owner was already 81 years old at the time. He personally picked up the car in Zuffenhausen in 1959 and the two of them experienced a lot together over the course of 53 years.
The accident-free condition and the “straight body”, as described in the eBay offer from 2012, have remained unchanged to this day. Certainly, thanks to good care and the dry climate in Nevada, the car never needed to be painted. Unfortunately, it fell victim to a storm in 1995 and was repainted on the outside due to hail damage. The best evidence of the very well-executed work at the time is, in addition to the thin paint layer thickness (on average between 400 and 500 mµ, see paint measurement report), the impeccable condition of the paintwork today. Luckily, no body work was necessary, as raw cars are still the holy grail and a real hit when compared to the many mediocre restorations that are circulating on the market…
This 356A changed hands in September 2012 and is still in his hands today. Despite the fact that the owner owned many other historic Porsche models, this one was always his favorite. He drove it a lot and praised the reliability and appearance of this 356 extremely. Over the last 12 years, some work has been necessary, all of which was carried out by the experts in our network. In 2016, the matching numbers engine was rebuilt with a slight displacement increase to 1680cc and 90 hp. At the same time, the remaining technology was also revised for a total of around 21,000 euros. In 2018, the slightly cracked leather covers were replaced, along with the outdated underlay.
