The vehicle in detail

It is remarkable how many elements of Porsche’s sports car legend had been established by the time the 356 A was introduced in 1955. The rear-engine configuration was in place, and with it came the immortal silhouette that still defines the style of the modern Porsche 911. Just as today, buyers could specify bare-bones models like the Speedster if they intended to race—while those seeking a more luxurious experience could select something like the 356 A 1600 “Sunroof” Coupe presented here.
According to a copy of the factory Kardex on file, chassis number 102192 was completed on 27 November 1957. Originally finished in Silver Metallic over a Red interior, it was built with US-market bumpers, a speedometer in miles per hour, and sealed-beam headlamps. Importantly, it was also factory-equipped with the desirable sunroof. This car was delivered new to a Mr. Craig Thompson via the influential Max Hoffman dealership of New York, New York. Hoffman, operating out of a glamorous, Frank Lloyd Wright-designed showroom on Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, played a crucial role in introducing Porsche to the United States, especially in the Northeast; Mr. Thompson was one of his many happy customers.

Acquired by the consignor four decades ago, this Porsche has benefited from a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration completed by a father and son team. As documented by photos and receipts on file, mechanical components, including the 1600 engine (apparently a replacement unit with partially legible stamping) and carburetors, as well as ancillary items like gauges, were rebuilt. Its transmission, a later type 741 unit, was also rebuilt and a new clutch fitted. Stoddard rubber seals and gaskets were used throughout the restoration, and a new wiring harness was installed. Shocks and brakes were replaced, and five Michelin XZX tires were fitted.
Before the coupe’s exterior was refinished in its present and highly attractive light gray, doors and windows were removed, all rust was addressed, floor panels were replaced, and the body was media-blasted and sealed. Chrome was replated, and Carrera GS/GT-style bumpers were fitted for a mild “outlaw” look. Its interior was sourced from Autos International, including headliner and square-weave carpet. The cabin also features Fibersteel Speedster-style seats—sure to be appreciated on longer drives—as well as a Blaupunkt radio.
A very attractive example of one of Porsche’s iconic sports cars, desirably fitted with a factory sunroof and equipped with carefully considered, driver-focused enhancements, this 356 A 1600 Coupe would be an excellent companion on spirited sprints and a wonderful candidate for touring.
