At one time, Porsche was experiencing some financial difficulties, so the range had to be extended beyond the immortal 911. This was to be done with an interesting roadster with a boxer engine, to be called the Boxster. The project was launched by Stuttgart in the spring of 1992, and was completed three and a half years later, with the very first model leaving the factory in 1996. With its 911 (996) front end, it quickly became a success and offered the German marque a less obscure future. It is one of those life-saving models that make legends of themselves. Its ease of handling and efficiency, thanks to a mid-mounted engine, meant that it would be available in many versions across several generations.
