Regardless of its exclusivity, it is and will always be a 944S2 Cabriolet that has proven what it can do over the decades. It wears its fur discreetly “inside”, as the saying goes.
It can do 250-260 km/h if desired, it catapults its occupants to 100 km/h in just under seven seconds, it sits like a proverbial plank on the road, opens its roof electrically, air-conditions its pilots, and doesn’t look “old” at all. At most you could justifiably call it a “classic”, which is really not a dirty word.
In our opinion, the “small” Porsche is one of the most misunderstood automobiles ever. Anyone who has one (or has had one in the past) appreciates it. The designers and engineers had in mind the task of building a typical Porsche sports car that would attract younger, less affluent customers to Porsche. But also and above all, to put the future of the Porsche sports car manufacturer on a more solid economic footing by introducing a third model series below the 928 and the 911. The Weissach think tank looked and developed much further into the future than could have been possible with the 911, the flagship model at the time. The specifications were clear: the new car should be more environmentally friendly, more user-friendly, safer and ultimately more economical than its big brother, which had already been built for almost 20 years, and at the same time convey everything that Porsche stood for – a reference in sports cars.
Anyone who has had the opportunity to drive it without losing their objectivity will come to the same conclusion as all professional car testers from well-known magazines before them – the 944 was, is and remains the better Porsche in terms of all its features. Of course, the die-hard 911 drivers from the air-cooled faction don't want to hear that, let alone accept it. On what point do we have to agree with them? When they counter with the biggest plus that the 911 has to offer – emotion, shape, sound, drive concept… it is and remains an automotive monument, a brilliant achievement, unrepeatable. The 911 therefore rightly deserves its well-deserved place in the box of the best. However, anyone who just leaves the emotions out of the picture a little and just wants to drive a sensational Porsche will quickly come back to the Transaxle-Zuffenhausen model. Whether as a 924, 944, 968 or 928 – each of them will remain a timeless classic with brilliant character traits forever.
Vehicle description
Rare special model with a polarizing color combination, of the last model year of the 944 produced in Zuffenhausen/Neckarsulm.
The vehicle presented has been in the hands of an enthusiast for the last 22 years, where it was only driven as a summer vehicle and was verifiably looked after very meticulously. The complete service book and the invoices, receipts and documents provided with it are evidence of very conscientious handling. Unusual – and yet extremely commendable – is the fact that this same previous owner stood by his 944 even at times when the general market was not paying any particular attention to his model and the prices of these vehicles were at a very low level by Porsche standards. At this point, it is important to mention that we have been dealing with this topic very intensively since the early 1980s, which is in the nature of things. That is why we can not only tell you verbally, but also from the literature we have collected over decades, provide black and white evidence that pretty much all series-produced Porsches had to go through this valley of tears. If you wanted an original 911 in the 1980s, you could get a long way with around DM 10,000… a 2.7 RS – now legendary – was also available for 12,000-15,000 DM, and the very successful Carrera 3.2 models were offered across all variants for between 15,000 and 60,000 DM, with the latter sum being asked for models like the 3.2 Speedster in mint condition. Remembering this every now and then helps even older people immensely to have the flexibility to kick themselves in the butt…
Before we continue to indulge in nostalgia, back to our “rubystone” – the previous owner took loving care of his Porsche for decades, never had an accident with it and looked after it to the highest degree.
You can see that today. The Porsche impresses with its fabulous overall condition with hardly any signs of wear, is in excellent accident-free condition and completely in its original paint except for the trunk lid, which had to be painted when a rod antenna was removed.
