The history of the factory-built ‘Flachbau’ (aka Slantnose) is only known by the finest Porsche experts.
Porsche started delivering ‘Flachbau’ cars as early as 1982 through their Porsche Exclusive program (then called Sonderwunsch). The first ever ‘Flachbau’ were derived from a one-off order for the owner of TAG: Mansour Ojjeh. These early cars did not have pop-up headlights and consisted of a 935-inspired fibre-glass front valance.
By 1987, Porsche started offering the ‘Flachbau’ option with steel fenders and pop-up headlights to their customers via the M505 (US-market) and M506 (RoW) options.
- US-market cars (M505) were equipped with the standard 930 front valance and standard 930 3.3 Turbo motor with catalytic converter (282hp).
- RoW cars (M506) were far more desirable as they all had the front-mounted oil cooler and the deeper air dam. Only 56 were built, including 50 RHD.
There were therefore only 6 RoW M506 ‘Flachbau’ ever built by Porsche in LHD configuration. Our lovely 930 is one of these six cars, and is also fitted with the highly coveted 930/66S ‘Turbo S’ factory power kit (offering a staggering 330bhp, a 4-pipe exhaust system, an upgraded turbocharger, a larger intercooler, modified camshafts and a boost pressure raised to 1bar) along with a Porsche Exclusive Leather-to-sample interior (99 interior trim code) with factory-fitted Recaro seats. A 1 of 1 specimen.
