The vehicle in detail

STUTTGART’S HYBRID HYPERCAR
Over the course of its seven-plus-decade history, Porsche has consistently crafted automobiles at the cutting edge of performance and technology. From the rally-winning all-wheel-drive 959 of the mid-1980s to the Le Mans-inspired Carrera GT of the new millennium, Stuttgart has built uncompromising performance models that showcase innovation and technological mastery. In 2013 the automaker unveiled another benchmark of engineering superiority with the Porsche 918 Spyder, which introduced state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid-electric technology to elevate performance while increasing efficiency.
The 918 Spyder features a chassis constructed almost entirely of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic composite. At its heart lies a naturally aspirated 90-degree V-8 based on the engine from the RS Spyder LMP2 Le Mans Prototype. It can rev to an earth-shaking 9,000 rpm thanks to a flat-plane crankshaft, titanium connecting rods, four valves per cylinder, and dry-sump lubrication. Direct fuel injection and the patented Porsche Variocam intake system provide this exclusive model with an exceptional 133 horsepower per liter of displacement.

Supporting the 918 Spyder’s conventional engine are a pair of electric motors, one mated to the V-8 itself and another providing drive to the front axle. Offering an additional 284 horsepower, they bring total output to 887 horsepower and 944 pound-feet of torque. All this power is managed through the venerable Porsche PDK seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and further refined through five different driving modes that range from full electric to “Hot Lap” (which squeezes every ounce of available performance from the advanced hybrid powertrain).
Of course, such a potently specified drivetrain could only be controlled by equally impressive brakes, and as such the 918 is equipped with massive carbon-ceramic discs measuring 410 millimeters in diameter at the front with six-piston calipers, and 390 millimeters at the rear with four-piston calipers. Smooth and linear handling is guaranteed by all-wheel-drive that features innovative all-wheel steering. An adjustable rear wing, a pair of under-floor flaps in the nose, and flaps in the headlamp area automatically attenuate to provide either maximum aerodynamic efficiency or additional downforce, depending on the selected driving mode and ambient road conditions.
The 918 Spyder’s performance is nothing short of extraordinary, as the sprint from standstill to 60 mph takes less than 2.5 seconds, making the Porsche quicker than both of its contemporary hybrid hypercar rivals, the Ferrari LaFerrari and the McLaren P1. Enthusiasts in pursuit of even more extreme performance could choose the weight-saving Weissach Package, which included magnesium alloy center-locking wheels, titanium chassis hardware, ceramic wheel bearings, and fabric door-release pull straps instead of conventional handles.
Apropos of the model’s name, Porsche built just 918 examples of the 918 Spyder, and it remains one of the most thrilling and momentous hypercars of its generation. It is an instant classic Stuttgart thoroughbred that figures to only further appreciate as the Porsche niche evolves into the next generation.
FROM THE TOP SHELF, AT ONLY 170 MILES
As one of just 297 spyders specified for the United States, this exquisite 918 “Weissach” Spyder boasts a level of rarity that, in combination with extremely low mileage and desirable options, results in a bellwether example of the venerable hypercar. Built in November 2014, serial number 067 was finished in GT Silver Metallic paint over an interior trimmed in Garnet Red leather with Silver piping (and offset with exposed carbon fiber), a most elegant color combination. The Porsche was furthermore optioned with a front axle lift system, glare-reducing interior package, stone guard, dual-zone automatic climate control, HomeLink system, multifunction sport steering wheel trimmed in leather, full film wrap-delete, a 25-foot cable, and the Burmester high-fidelity surround sound infotainment system and storage compartment.
Retailed through marque dealer Bellevue Porsche of Bellevue, Washington, the 918 was sold to its first owner in January 2015. After passing to the next caretaker in 2018, the Spyder relocated to California, as reflected by a service at Porsche Marin of Mill Valley. By the time of its purchase by a third owner in February 2022, the car had been driven just 148 miles.
Currently displaying just 170 miles on the odometer, this sensational, barely driven 918 “Weissach” Spyder benefits from a very short ownership chain, resulting in a breathtaking example of the Stuttgart hypercar. For Porsche collectors, supercar enthusiasts, and pursuers of the best low-mileage hypercar examples in the market, serial number 067 could hardly offer a better opportunity. Accompanied by owner’s manuals, charger, and six-point racing harnesses, this outstanding, minimally used 918 Spyder capably reminds us why the Weissach competition legend is so special.
