The first Porsche 911 type 996 GT3 immediately won over enthusiasts when it was unveiled. Everything was in place to make it a beast of sport: looks, concrete chassis, demonic flat 6, performance, character… As you can imagine, we at Automobile Sportive were 300% behind Porsche’s 911 GT3. However, its production was severely limited for homologation purposes, and its exterior styling was based on the Boxster’s light units, so criticized when the Porsche 911 type 996 was launched. For its new racing mascot, Porsche has made it even better. The new Porsche 911 GT3’s look is more enticing and 911-like than ever, and it’s more efficient than ever, with a reworked Flat 6 that’s even more powerful and furious, and even better performance…
The two generations of Porsche 911 GT3 are distinguished by a number of notable differences. The wheels have retained the same 18-inch diameter, but have a different, more modern design, the bumpers have been redesigned and are more aggressive, and the rear spoiler is more prominent to optimize aerodynamic load when the car evolves. Last but not least, this GT3 will no longer be mistaken for a Boxster, as the front light clusters used on the Turbo models have been adopted from the 911 range. This GT3 is 30 mm lower than a normal Carrera, and the shock absorbers are 60% harder.
On the first Porsche 911 GT3, the flat 6 was already very powerful, with an output of 100 hp/liter! This is rare enough for a naturally-aspirated engine. However, for this new model, the men from Zuffenhausen have gone back to the drawing board and reworked the heart of the GT3. The result? For the same displacement, they’ve added 21 bhp and 1.5 mkg.
To achieve this, the entire drivetrain has been lightened, allowing a higher rotational speed with a maximum rpm of 8,200. They have also adopted a more progressive timing variator and new settings for the engine’s electronic management unit.
With its 381 hp, the Flat sounds loud and clear. The transmission has undergone few changes.
