Vittorio Strosek’s career had started working under legendary automotive designer Luigi Colani. Founding Strosek Auto Design GmbH in Utting am Ammersee in 1982, Strosek developed design programs for renowned marques including Porsche, Lamborghini and Nissan as well as undertaking specialist engineering work for others; the dihedral doors of the McLaren SLR , bodykit design for Willy Koenig of Koenig Specials for example. His work with aerodynamics saw him competing in the ADAC GT Cup with modified 911s and 928s.

During the early 1990s, Strosek partnered with their official US distributor. Of the 15 examples production run, the 11 other cars were completed Strosek’s factory in Germany, Fred Opert Racing would convert the other 4 cars.

Das Fahrzeug im Detail

Supplied new to Jack Daniels Porsche of Fair Lawn, New Jersey, this 964 Speedster was 1 of 469 example supplied new to the USA. Optioned from new in Grand Prix White over Black leatherette. Original options included a limited slip differential, air-conditioning, body coloured seat backs, automatic speed control and an AM/FM radio cassette. As noted by the original window sticker for the car, retained in the history folder, the original list price was just over $72,000.

This example was purchased by a wealthy New Hampshire couple, alongside a matching black example, as a pair from Jack Daniels Porsche in 1994. The pair were offered at the dealership at the time as ‘last chance air-cooled Speedsters’. USA distributor Frank Opert was tasked with purchasing both cars and quite unusually shipping them back to Strosek in Germany for ‘factory’ conversions instead of carrying out the works in the USA.

The Strosek Mega Widebody conversion totalled $36,000 at the time; over half the price of the Speedster. The conversion replaced all of the panels bar the bonnet. Wide rear bodywork, a revised front a rear bumper setup, side skirts and revised front wings housing new headlights. A bespoke Strosek sports exhaust was fitted along with bespoke O.Z. 3 piece wheels. The interior sees Dove Grey leather inserts and custom floormats.

Post works, the car returned to the USA and was first registered in May of 1994. The Strosek Speedster would remain with its first custodian until 2001 in New Hampshire. The second owner purchased the car with just 8,550 miles from new and the car moved down south to Florida. The second owner’s 10-year custodianship would see the car cover just 270 miles per year with the mileage at the time of their sale standing at just 11,585 miles.

Purchased in 2012 by the current owner, the car was exported to the UK where it has taken pride of place within a prominent Porsche collection. Placed into storage, the Strosek was first registered in the UK in May 2024. Used exceedingly sparingly, the Strosek has covered just 200 miles since purchase.

In preparation for sale, this 911 has been to marque specialists JZM Porsche for an engine service, brake fluid change and inspection. All four tyres will be replaced post service. Today presenting with just 11,900 miles, this Strosek Mega Speedster presents as a rare opportunity to acquire of the original 15 examples, rarer too in that it was built in Germany.

Model:

With the possibility of the 964 offering aficionados the very last air-cooled Speedster experience, its arrival was hotly anticipated. The new model would incorporate a wealth of design cues from the original Speedster of the early 1950s, an idea developed from US importer Max Hoffman persistence that a lightweight, spartan, fabric-topped 356 would sell well in the flourishing USA market.

With the 356 held in such high regard, Porsche hoped that the return of the name once more would see order books filled. Production was expected to run to 3000 units, but just 936 examples were completed. 469 of these were supplied new to the USA and unusually for a US-market model, remained almost identical to its counterparts destined for European markets.

The Speedster received the engine and gearbox from the standard 964 Carrera 2, notably the 3.6-litre six cylinder outputting 247hp and paired with the five-speed G50 transmission.
