From outsider to permanent base: the success formula called Panamera raised quite a few eyebrows when it was introduced in 2009, but a few generations or facelifts later we can safely call it a traditional Porsche recipe. What’s that like? Well, pretty perfect – thanks in part to ventilated massage seats in the front and rear of this example. This concerns the Turbo S E-Hybrid, or the 680 hp top model among the Panameras. Other options that make the sporty Porsche heart pump faster are the rear axle steering, the panoramic roof, SportDesign package, carbon interior package, Porsche InnoDrive, soft-close doors, LED Matrix headlights including PDSL+, HomeLink and the Burmester High-end sound system. Or would it be the sports exhaust that we enthusiasts prefer to listen to all day long? To ask the question is to answer it…
Design
The time when we wondered why an iconic sports car manufacturer released a 5-door model is long behind us. It started with the Cayenne, an SUV, and took off again with the Porsche Panamera: a luxurious GT including 4 doors and a sloping roofline a la 911. Generation 2 called Panamera 971 is a clever evolution of the original: the 970. The distinctive silhouette and curves were retained, but the streamline became more elegant, powerful and attractive. Speaking of power: this Turbo S E-Hybrid takes maximum advantage of the sporty Porsche DNA, referring to the many black exterior details from the SportDesign package, the black tailpipes of the sports exhaust and the black window frames. The housing of the LED Matrix lighting with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus is also black. The LED taillights are hidden behind dark glass, just like the rear passengers. The mysterious character of the chic Volcano Gray metallic painted Panamera (including lower parts of the SportDesign mirrors) is only truly complete by the absence of the model designation. Meanwhile, the black 21-inch wheels offer a clear view of fluorescent yellow brake calipers that refer to pure PHEV power. Yet it is ironic that the brakes say something about the unprecedented sprint qualities of the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid…
Equipment
We have never had any complaints about the seating comfort of the luxurious 4-seater Gran Turismo. However, Porsche’s perfectionists always see room for improvement: real comfort seats have been installed in the back of the black leather interior. These, just like the seats in the 1st row, have both a ventilation function and a massage function. All fine, but the position behind the heated steering wheel remains a favorite. That’s right, you will have less time and opportunity along the way to marvel at beautiful finishing details such as the high-quality carbon interior package with matching floor carpets. Let alone open the electric sun curtains and quietly gaze up through the panoramic roof. On the other hand, you have full access to systems such as Lane Change Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Park Assist including Surround View Camera, Porsche InnoDrive, a Head-up Display and HomeLink garage door opener. The question is whether the sound-resistant Privacy Glass can sufficiently dampen the sturdy Burmester High-end Surround Sound sounds in combination with Digital radio. On the other hand: the sports exhaust system will effortlessly drown out any melody. Close the soft-close doors with a finger, turn on the ambient lighting front and rear and go. What a party!
Technology
The 7.2 kW Onboard charger is one of the few aspects that reveals that this is not just a luxury Porsche GT with merciless Turbo S forces. Putting all 680 horses and 850 Newton meters to work equals an acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Via 8 automatic gears, the double-blown 4.0 liter V8 reaches a magical top speed of 310 km/h. At least as impressive as the straight-line speed is the grip and comfort in corners. Aided by rear-axle steering, a giant like the four-wheel drive Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid manages to navigate even the tightest curves. Or you choose to zoom quietly from A to B for 40 km entirely electrically… Well. This is and remains a real Porsche. Happy.
