The Porsche 997 is the second generation of water-cooling in the 911 series and was really where Porsche figured everything out. The previous 996 had numerous mechanical issues and the most polarizing 911 design in the company’s history. Porsche knew that when the 997 debuted, it was essential to address those items. When it was introduced in 2004 as a 2005 model, the 997 was a breath of fresh air to Porsche lovers — returning to round headlights and looking like a natural successor to the 993. To this day, many enthusiasts consider the 997 to be the greatest water-cooled 911 generation as it offers great performance, a visceral driving experience, and modern amenities but is still small enough to enjoy on tight backroads where a larger modern 911 may not give you the room to select your line.
This 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet is a lifelong California car that shows just 12,275 miles at the time of cataloging. Finished in Cobalt Blue with a Metropol Blue cloth convertible top, this Carrera S benefits from a number of aftermarket upgrades that give it a unique, sporty look. The keen-eyed will note that this 997 has a new front bumper, side skirts, and a large fixed rear wing. These are all from legendary Porsche tuning house Gemballa and separate this car from almost every other 911 on the road. Additionally, a set of HRE FF01 wheels in a beautiful smoked gray finish sit in front of red brake calipers with drilled rotors that offer a nice contrast with the rest of the exterior.
Although it’s hard to tell in photos, the blue of the exterior carries through to the interior, which has been specified in Sea Blue, which is nearly black in color. Up front, a pair of adaptive sport seats have been optioned with hardbacks in silver and heat capabilities. The interior has been optioned with the Aluminum look finish around the interior, which includes an aluminum-look steering wheel, door card accents, emergency brake handle, and PCM module surround. Bose high-end sound package has been optioned, along with PCM navigation and park assist.
Sitting at the rear of the 997 Carrera S is a naturally aspirated, water-cooled 3.8-liter flat-6 known as the M97. Producing 355 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque, this engine offers great performance, significantly improved reliability over the outgoing model, and a truly excellent sound as you rev it out. The noise is further improved by the factory sport exhaust system, which has switchable modes for when you want to quiet the car down or when you reach the backroads and would like more sound. In this car, it is paired with a 5-speed Tiptronic S gearbox with manual shift capabilities on the steering wheel’s spokes.
The 997 Carrera is a real modern classic and is a great car to add to a collection or use as your everyday transport. This Carrera S Cabriolet benefits from a beautiful color scheme, interesting options, and exterior modifications that help it stand out from the crowd. If you have been looking for a car to enjoy with the top down as the months get warmer, this may be the 911 for you.
