The Porsche 911 – Type 996 entered a new era in the life of the world’s most famous sports car. After 35 years of production, Porsche took a new direction with the fifth generation of the 911. Radical changes were required. Not only the design and the chassis would change radically, but also the motorization was drastically changed. Due to stricter emission standards and the achievement of maximum power, the power source would no longer be air-cooled, but water-cooled.
The 996 was presented to the general public at the Frankfurt motor show in 1997 and although the new design was not immediately enthusiastically received by the purists, the new ‚eleven‘ would stand its ground. It was available from 1998 as a rear-wheel drive coupe and equipped with a 3.4L water-cooled boxer engine, good for 300hp.
At the Geneva salon in 1999, Porsche presented a radical 911 that the purists had to reconcile with the new design of the 996. A pure and hard 911, without electronic aids and equipped with an engine directly from motorsport. The GT3 is a fact!
In 2003, the GT3 evolves and the GT3 RS is the most hard-core variant of the 996. With the implementation of a maximum slimming course, the placement of aroll cage, lighter flywheel, … the RS is ready for the circuit. With its 381hp and only 1360kg, it does justice to its name ‚RennSport‘! Production runs until 2005 and already stops at 682 units.
