First introduced in 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show, the 991-generation Porsche 911 combined a brand-new platform (only the third since the model’s inception) with numerous updates over its predecessor, the well-lauded 997. A new transaxle allowed the rear wheels to be better positioned in relation to the engine for optimum dynamics and weight distribution. A dramatically improved interior ensured enthusiasts could enjoy grand touring comfort or impressive support through corners as necessary.
Initially released in Carrera and upgraded Carrera S versions, the 991 stable quickly grew with the 2012 announcement of the all wheel drive models, the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S. With 400 horsepower and the optional PDK dual-clutch automatic, one can easily achieve a 0-60 time of 4.1 seconds. Cabriolets of either variety can lower their soft tops in just 13 seconds. While any variety of 991 is a fantastic choice, the Carrera 4S offers what may be the sweet spot of the range for the average buyer. Its near-supercar stats come without the stigma or compromises one makes with a more esoteric vehicle.
