“You Won’t See Another 911 Like This at Your Porsche Club Meet” –Road & Track Strosek Speedster review

The large community of Porsche enthusiasts has any number of sub-groups. Perhaps the two most significant camps distinguish between owners who prefer their 911s in pure stock-condition versus those who embrace modified cars. Those modifications can range from minor variations from stock to the wildest of interpretations of what a 911 can be. A Strosek 911 Speedster resides firmly in the second camp, arguably a bit out near the edge. As Road & Track put it, with a Strosek example, you can expect to garner all sorts of interest, subtle criticism, and outright delight at your next PCA get-together. Fashion editor, Diane Vreeland, is quoted as having once advised, “Oh please, just don’t be boring.” The elite group of owners of Strosek Porsches has fully embraced that ethic.

The elfersport group explained the Strosek origins and appeal: “The internationally renowned industrial designer Vittorio Strosek – under whose leadership Strosek had probably the broadest range of aerodynamic components for Porsche sports cars between 1982 and 2004 – dedicated his work primarily to sharpening the vehicle design. He usually left motor optimization or tuning in the traditional sense to other providers. The organic design and the reduction in the frontal area associated with the Mega Speedster model not only show the signature of his teacher Luigi Colani, but also underline the pleasing Porsche curves so skillfully that the remarkable increase in vehicle width is hardly noticeable. Rather, the overall composition of the car looks much more powerful than the original product, but without being intrusive.”

Offered here is a stunning Strosek Porsche Speedster in custom Maritime blue. One of only 427 1994 (964-series) Speedsters imported to the U.S. market out of a total of 935 made by Porsche worldwide, the car was purchased new by San Francisco Giants slugger, Barry Bonds. It has also been featured in 911 Porsche Magazine, as well as in a Dream Cars 2000 calendar. The Speedster has traveled just 34,800 miles since new, or under 1,500 miles per-year. Clearly, it has been cared for responsibly and carefully stored when not in use. Its Carfax report does show unspecified damage in California in 2004, but no sign of any such damage remains.

Among the car’s features are: The Strosek steel body kit; Andial-built 3.8 liter horizontal-6 engine; custom upholstered Recaro sport seats; air conditioning; cruise control; power windows; front fog lights; 4-wheel ABS disc brakes; dual front air bags; alloy wheels; Pioneer audio head unit; Porsche “Big red” brakes; custom-fabricated twin-hoop roll bar; and color-matched instrument faces.

The exterior Maritime blue paint retains excellent gloss overall with no obvious flaws. In particular, the front of the car with its re-worked headlights, the wide-body fender flares, and the revised rear deck and engine cover all exhibit the Storsek flair and factory-quality workmanship without seeming too over-the-top. Body-panel fit is well within factory tolerances. The Speedster-specific, black trimmed windshield shows no flaws. Behind its 5-spoke alloy wheels with Porsche crest center caps and high-performance tires, Porsche-branded red brake calipers and drilled brake rotors can be seen. A black-fabric convertible top continues the bespoke Speedster lines when deployed.

Inside, the Recaro seats in charcoal leather with Maritime-blue-matching Alcantara inserts are especially striking. The custom, blue-faced instruments add drama to the dash. The 6-speed manual transmission shifter is console mounted in the factory location. Doors are trimmed in gray and feature the pull-strap door handles featured on many Porsche factory race cars. Cabin carpeting is light gray. Billet aluminum floor pedals are in place.

The rear engine compartment is clean and complete, but not highly detailed. A blue fan shroud carries the custom color onto the powerplant.

This one-of-one Srosek Speedster is faithfully presented in the more than 100 high-definition photographs together with a short walk-around-and-startup video available at the GarageKeptMotors site. That said, particularly for a rare, investment-grade automobile of this caliber, there is no substitute for an in-person, up-close inspection. We encourage such inspections by interested parties at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. We ask only that an appointment be made by phone or email in advance. Our showroom is not open to the public.

The online automobile-enthusiast magazine, Petrolicious, called a Strosek Porsche 911 “…the perfect car for an enthusiast who’s a bit more outgoing and won’t shy away from the attention this car will no doubt attract.”

In that regard, we are certain this Strosek Speedster will not disappoint.
