The iconic Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 from 1973 served as a means to homologate the 911 Carrera RSR 2.8 for FIA Group 4 racing. Similarly, the 964 Carrera RS introduced in 1992 was created to homologate the Carrera RSR 3.8. Approved for global road use except in the US, the new RS was based on the Carrera Cup competition car and made available in Basic (“Lightweight”) trim, or as a more comfortably appointed M002 Touring variant.
The Carrera RS utilized a standard 964 Carrera 2 body shell that was partially seam-welded and reinforced for enhanced rigidity. To boost performance, various luxury and convenience items were deleted from the specification such as an air conditioner, radio, electric windows and mirrors, cruise control, and fog lights. Other weight-reduction measures included an aluminum hood, 17” Magnesium Cup wheels, thinner carpeting (replacing rear seats), lightweight door panels, fiberglass bucket seats, a simplified wiring harness, a smaller battery, thinner glass, and a one-liter windshield washer tank. Interior sound dampening and undercoating materials were either reduced or omitted entirely.
Powering the Carrera RS was a 3.6-liter M64/03 flat-six engine. Derived from the M64/01 used in the standard 964 Carrera 2 and 4, the revised unit featured matched pistons and cylinders, more rigid engine mounts, and a reprogrammed DME control unit with more advanced ignition timing. Reaching 260 hp at 6,100 rpm and 232 lbs./ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm, the engine was mated to a close-ratio Type G50/10 five-speed manual transaxle equipped with a single-mass flywheel, and an asymmetrical limited-slip differential.
The RS’ suspension was revised over standard Carrera models and featured upgraded Bilstein shock absorbers and shorter springs along with a cross-brace between the front top mounts for increased stiffness and handling. Other changes included new upper spring strut mounts with ball joints, harder rubber control arm bushings, and revised trailing arm mounts. The RS’ braking system was upgraded with four-piston calipers and 322 mm discs from the contemporary 964 Turbo for the front, and 299 mm Carrera Cup components in the rear.
Weighing 2,706 pounds, the 964 Carrera RS was a notable – and detectable – 286 pounds lighter than the standard Carrera 2 resulting in an objectively quicker and more responsive car. However, for enthusiasts with a desire to participate in FIA Group N/GT competition, or just craving a more intense driving experience, there was the option of the race-ready M003 Carrera RS N/GT.
Intended to closely resemble the Carrera Cup racing car while remaining road-going, the N/GT variant underwent additional stripping and lightening measures even compared to the RS Basic, and featured a minimalist interior without carpeting, no sound deadening, and a built-in Matter roll cage. Additional enhancements included a larger fuel tank, a relocated DME control unit, Recaro bucket seats upholstered with Nomex fire-resistant upholstery, six-point Schroth racing harnesses, an external ignition kill switch, and a fire suppression system.
This 1992 Porsche 964 Carrera RS N/GT was ordered by Klaus Völkmann through Porsche Zentrum in Dortmund, Germany. One of approximately 290 examples built, this N/GT is finished in Maritime Blue – an extremely uncommon and bold non-metallic hue – over a black interior, and equipped with the M003 “Racing Safety Devices” package.
First delivered in January 1992, Völkmann reportedly drove this N/GT home from the dealership and immediately placed it in controlled storage. A very early member of Porsche Club Deutchland, Völkmann is said to have owned both this N/GT and another 964 RS, with the latter being driven more frequently.
In 2017, the consignor purchased this N/GT, adding it to his extensive collection of significant air-cooled Porsches. Displaying a mere 55 km (less than 34 miles) on its odometer, this time capsule RS has continued to be preserved within its owner’s expansive private Porsche collection and, naturally, remains in virtually as-delivered condition.
Presented in impeccable and unrepeatable “unused” condition throughout having never turned a wheel in anger in the racing series it was intended for, this rare and exclusive Maritime Blue N/GT is supplied with its original books, tools, jack, delivery paperwork, and other historical documentation.
Whether it’s cherished as a prized collection piece for posterity or enjoyed on the road or track will be a decision that the N/GT’s next custodian will have to make.
