Not to be confused with an RS America, the 964 Carrera RS was a racing version of the 964 not offered originally in North America, produced for just 12 months. Based directly on the 964 Cup Car (and used to homologate Porsche’s racing program), the Carrera RS features a reinforced seam welded chassis, shorter gearing, upgraded suspension, upgraded brakes, lightweight interior, minimal sound deadening, no power steering, no radio, no A/C, manual windows, manual mirrors, a lightweight flywheel, standard LSD, sharper engine tuning, lightweight body panels, lightweight manual windows, and lightweight Magnesium wheels, all combining to offer one of the most pure driver-focused air cooled street car experiences money can buy. Limited to just 2,282 units (including all RS variants), these cars are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Based on the research we’ve been able to conduct through the cars paperwork file, 964 RS #490213 was delivered new in March of 1992 from Autohaus Huber in Zellberg Austria to David Messinger, who owned the car until 1994 with ~14k km. The next owner was Karl Lerchbacher, also of Austria, who seems to have kept the car for nearly 24 years until 2018 with ~36k km – Karl drove the car semi-regularly from 1994-2010, accumulating 1-2k km per year, then seemingly parked the car until its sale in 2018 to the owner of a small car dealer group in Austria. The car was serviced, and another ~1k km was added from his time of purchase, but the car continued to largely sit unused in storage until we discovered it in 2022.
We purchased this RS from the dealer/owner in Austria in late 2022 after a positive pre-purchase inspection, then shipped directly to Canada and spent the majority of 2023 lightly restoring the car in preparation for its next owner. We had the exterior repainted in its original non-metallic black by our local Porsche-partnered bodyshop (at a cost of ~$25k) – the car did not have any major defects, but had chips, dings and imperfections on nearly every panel from storage, and therefore full refinishing was the best option. The shop was able to retain original paint where possible (door sills, front trunk, engine bay) to avoid unnecessary/intrusive disassembly of original components. The car is confirmed to retain its original glass, doors, quarters, and rear decklid. The hood has been replaced with a correct aluminum RS-version replacement. Following paintwork, the car was sent for a thorough inspection and major engine-out service/full mechanical reconditioning (performed at 37,330km), including the following:
- Engine out service
- Oil/filter change
- Drain and clean fuel tank
- Remove injectors, ultrasonic clean (to remove old gas buildup)
- Spark plugs
- Resealing various seals/gaskets to address any oil leaks
- Valve adjustment
- All drive belts (inc. distributor)
- Fuel filter
- Distributor rebuild
- Ignition rotor
- Rear hood strut
- Engine bay foam pad
- Refinish all engine trays
- 4 new Michelin tires
- All 4 brakes – calipers rebuilt, refinished by Porsche,
- Brake fluid flush
- Various suspension boots/seals/bump stops/bushings
Full reconditioning invoice, parts list, and paintwork invoice available on request. Currently, the car shows well, in good driver quality (but not completely concours) condition. Many parts remain original and minor wear and tear can be found from use and age – the repaint should allow its next owner to enjoy driving with a bit less fear of risk of damaging originality – just enjoy the car. The car drives very well, tight, straight, with incredible power. There are no oil leaks or mechanical issues currently present. Mileage is always difficult to prove on any car with an analogue odometer that predates electronic record keeping, but based on an odometer inspection (removed and verified unoriginal/unopened), and the vehicle’s history file showing periods of inactivity and no mileage inconsistencies, we believe this car to have an original ~38k km. Please view the vehicle history summary in the photo gallery for mileage logs available with the car. A full scanned PDF of all available documentation is available on request, along with a gallery of 200+ photos and videos, and a current PPI report from Porsche. The car will be sold including at least 1 key, owners manual package and original stamped servicebook, a binder of paper records dating back to the cars first service, a full reconditioning report, a clean CarFax report, and a clean Ontario title.
