After years of dominating endurance racing, Porsche took a bold step forward in 1986 with the introduction of a a seven car run of 944 Turbos, purpose built for the SCCA Escort Endurance Racing Series. Delivered to Holbert Porsche, the U.S. importer, and later sold to Sewickley Porsche, this car was actively campaigned from 1986 to 1988, making its mark in the highly competitive endurance circuit.
In 1987, it saw action with none other than factory Porsche drivers Derek Bell and Bill Adam—wearing the iconic Rothmans livery. As an early factory-built race variant, it featured a magnesium intake manifold and oil pan, upgraded racing suspension, and a factory roll cage. Additional lightweight components, including a fiberglass hood, special offset Fuchs wheels, and lightened glass, enhanced agility, while lowered rear-end gearing and an upgraded turbo pushed output to approximately 350 HP.
