Porsche introduced the 944 for the 1982 model year. Based on the 924 platform, the 944 was better equipped than its stablemate while offering increased power and handling. From 1986, a turbocharged variant was offered, transforming the 944 into a serious performance car. Using the base model’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, the 944 Turbo added a KKK turbocharger, larger brakes, uprated suspension, and aerodynamic enhancements.
One of only 1,385 exported to the US for 1989, the final year of production, this Porsche 944 Turbo features upgrades from the previous year’s Turbo S as standard including a 250 hp engine, reinforced five-speed transaxle with external oil cooler, and 40% locking differential among the highlights. Handsomely finished in Alpine White over blue leather upholstery, other equipment includes M030 sport suspension, power sunroof, and a Blaupunkt stereo system with equalizer. Showing less than 22,000 miles at the time of cataloguing, this example presents in largely original condition throughout and is offered with books, service records, and original sales documentation.
With a claimed 0–60 mph time of 5.7 seconds and 162 mph top speed, the 944 Turbo could give Ferrari’s Testarossa a run for its money in its day. Still eminently capable with the bonus of a practical hatchback design, this impressively wellkept 944 Turbo is ready for its next fortunate custodian to preserve or enjoy.
