Is the limited 911 R not so familiar to you yet? Then read our detailed explanation of this very special 911:
The 911 R came out in 1967 as the ultimate sports car for track and road. It was particularly lightly built and unusual for the time: Equipped with plastic doors, fenders and front cover. Yes even all windows except the windshield. It weighed 800 kg and with 2.0 liter engine from the Porsche 906 it produced 210 hp. With this he broke many long distance speed records, such as 10,000 miles in 76:31:49 or how about 96 hours of driving at an average speed of 209 km/h.
In the 1969 Tour de France for cars, he dominated from the first to the last stage, a total of 5,000 km! It reached bizarre speeds and was extremely reliable, typical Porsche. Truly one of those cars that makes you feel like a child again for a moment, that you can’t sleep. Pure.
In 2016, almost 50 years later, it came back, with the same core values. It is pure, lightweight, exclusive and brimming with emotion. Analog in the now digital world. A reincarnation of stature.
Through the use of Carbon front fenders and front cover, a magnesium roof and the rear side windows and rear window made of Poly-carbonate, everything indicates its light weight. No rear seats, no unnecessary carpet or footrest, everything made to be sporty. Comes only with 6-speed manual transmission, also lighter than the PDK, and with a very short shift path. Ceramic brakes are 50% lighter than steel brakes, so that choice was easy on the drawing board.
The seats, made of lightweight Carbon, are upholstered in Pepita fabric, another detail reminiscent of the days of yore. The seat fits like a glove, the doors fitted with a fabric loop to open the door, as well as less noise-reducing materials. All this makes the R weigh only 1,370 kg.
The engine, the sporty heart, is a 4.0-liter, 500-hp, 6-cylinder Boxer engine, which revs up to 8,500 rpm. Maximum torque of 460 NM is available at 6,250 rpm. A wonderfully unctuous engine, it has exceptional pulling power at both lower, and very high revs.
With all these fantastic figures, comes the very best suspension. This is why they chose the 911 GT3 as an example. It is extremely sporty, lies just as low as the GT3 and the tuning is adapted to the manual transmission. The co-steering rear axle works both ways. At low speeds, the rear wheels counter-steer, making it easier to turn around its like. At higher speeds, the rear wheels actually turn with it, so it lies even better in long fast turns. An extraordinary sensation.
Other special features, such as dynamic engine mounts, adjustable shock absorbers (PASM) with a 30 mm lowered suspension and a sport-tuned Porsche Stability System, the 911 R has it all.
