There are some cars so perfectly suited to the era in which they were created that they become representative of not just the ethos of the manufacturer but of what is key to an entire generation of automobile enthusiasts. The 2016 Porsche 911 R is one such car. Built in limited numbers, it was an immediate hit with both Porsche collectors and automotive enthusiasts in general. So desired, in fact, that it ultimately normalized the idea of allocations and waitlists for those interested in purchasing the most desirable Porsche models and was the first jewel in the crown for 918 Spyder Circle members.
The 911 R featured the 4.0-liter, 500-horsepower engine from the GT3 RS, a newly developed six-speed manual transmission, ceramic composite brakes, carbon fiber body panels, titanium exhaust, and a magnesium roof panel. Heady stuff. Every magazine or YouTube channel that could source a press car raved about the sound, power, and purity of driving experience the new 911 R created for those fortunate enough to sit behind the wheel.
Integral to that experience was a Porsche’s six-speed ‚GT Sport‘ manual transmission – newly developed exclusively for the 911 R. This new six-speed GT Sport manual closed up the ratios and shortened the throws creating a connection between driver and car in a way no PDK equipped Porsche can. As amazing as it sounds, this transmission is credited with saving both the manual transmission option at Porsche and the immersive experience derived from it.
Ordered through Hendrick Porsche of Charlotte, North Carolina – by a 918 Spyder Circle VIP no less – this 911 R was delivered through Porsche’s Experience Center Delivery program in Atlanta. No doubt influenced by the Communication Color livery in Porsche’s marketing materials, 911 R limitation number ‚346‘ is finished in Carrara White with top stripes in red and side stripes in black with PORSCHE lettering in red. Technical and exterior options include desirable features such as front axle lift, extended range fuel tank, single mass flywheel with reinforced clutch, LED Headlights in Black with PDLS, SportDesign exterior mirrors in carbon fiber, clear taillights, and wheels painted in high-gloss black. Well optioned on the interior as well, this example features the optional leather package of Black/Tarpan Brown and front lightweight carbon bucket seats with houndstooth inserts. Additional interior options notably include the Sport Chrono package, a fire extinguisher, light design package, carbon fiber floor mats, and door panels and dashboard trim in leather.
While the options list, as extensive and well selected as it is, creates the personalized spec of ‚346‘ there is no denying that the 911 R even in its most basic form is one of the best Porsche 911s of all time. As expected, a car of this importance and quality includes many items that often go missing over time and ownership changes. It retains both main keys, owner’s manuals, PEC Experience Center Delivery Atlanta booklet, window sticker, 911 R ‚Welcome Kit,‘ and purchase paperwork. It also includes a clean Carfax report and service paperwork from Porsche of Greenville from 13 September 2021 that show the four year service was performed at 653 miles. Rare is the opportunity to acquire an era-defining supercar like the 911 R and this example – and barely broken in with 1,683 at time of cataloging – has, in effect, leapt from the brochure pages allowing the future owner to turn the daydreams of 2016 into reality today.
