The “Lightweight” Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS:
The 911 2.7 Carrera RS was built for one purpose, to allow Porsche to participate in motor racing. Motorsport homologation requirements dictated that 500 units had to be produced, but in October 1972 at the Paris Auto Show, the official introduction of the cars, Porsche sold out and another 500 were given the green light. Ultimately, Porsche would make 1,580 examples by the end of 1973, the vast majority being standard “Touring” models.
There were mainly 2 variants of the 2.7 Carrera RS, a ‘Touring’ or ‘Lightweight’ specification, although Porsche also produced two other models, an RSH homologation special and the RSR race car.
1,308 Carrera RS units were specified from stock with the M472 ‘Touring’ package, but only 200 examples were specified from the M471 ‘Lightweight’ option which featured thinner steel for the fenders, doors and the roof panel in conjunction with clear glass from the Belgian firm Glaverbel. The lightweight cars also had no sound insulation, no folding rear seats, no sun visors, no dashboard clock, radio or glove box door, these were really targeted machines . The list of differences continues with the “lightweight” also equipped with racing seats, no power windows, fiberglass bumpers, no chrome decorative strip along the sill, no opening rear windows.
The model presented is in the very desirable Grand Prix white livery with Carrera stripes and 15′ blue Fuchs rims.
The current owner owns it, a well-known driver in Porsche and Ferrari racing circles, has used it for a long time on the track where it has proven its great efficiency.
Following an engine failure, the latter was replaced by Porsche.
Definitely racing, this model is equipped with its roll cage and all the necessary safety equipment.
It’s just waiting for you to make its legendary 6-cylinder roar again and give you an endless smile at the wheel.
