Characteristics are similar to the 2.7 Carrera, however the increased displacement pushed out 200bhp naturally aspirated horsepower. This gave the engine an increased torque curve, which allowed the Carrera 3.0 to out accelerate its 2.7 litre predecessor from 25-100mph by almost 4 seconds. Of the total number of 3.0 cars produced, 2564 were coupes and only 1123 where Targa format, and only a very small number were manufactured in RHD. It was donned with the prestigious Porsche ‘Carrera’ label. Carrera is a trademarked name (Spanish for ‘Race’) exclusively used by Porsche for some of its models to honour the company’s success in the Carrera Panamericana.
As Dirk-Michael Conrad noted in his Sport Auto article: ‘The legendary Porsche fist treats its passengers to an unimpaired punch. Only 6.3 seconds pass when the speedometer indicates 100 km/h. Thus, the 1976 Carrera is actually a tenth of a second faster than its 210bhp predecessor. Only over that marker can the old Carrera finally get by and overtake.’
