“Last of the Originals: The Porsche 356C” – Hemmings Buyer’s Guide, September 2010

The Hemmings writer, Jim Donnelly, aptly described these very special Porsches: “Immortal. A rolling altar at the midst of any automotive collection, a redefinition of the term “sports car“ that wears Stuttgart’s black, red and yellow shield. It’s an automobile that’s the absolute, unwavering success of uniqueness and unbreakable function. This is a historic Porsche, revered, reliable and absolutely recession-proof as an investment. And we’re not talking about a 911 here.“

– Real Deal 356
– Professional, Frame Off Restoration by Euro Autowerks
– 1600cc 4 Cylinder
– 4 Speed Manual Transmission

“The 356C, assembled and sold between 1963 and 1965, is the last, best old-school Porsche, clearly evolved from Volkswagen roots, with a quartet of horizontally positioned cylinders cooled by the rush of air. When you view a 356C against the Ould Sod orthodoxy of Sixties sports cars, it comes across at once as an arrogant bird-flip of design.

“… any iteration of a 356 represents clear benchmarks in Porsche’s unfolding into its unmistakable take on sportive driving. The 356C accounts for a very long stride in that journey. It can be persuasively claimed that in the 356C, Porsche left its Volkswagen roots behind, irretrievably.”

Offered here is a 1965 Porsche 356C in metallic Polo green over tan, the beneficiary of a full and superb professional restoration by Euro Autowerks. This is a stellar, collector-grade example of the “immortal” 356. In total, the car has been driven 95,239 miles, or roughly 1,700 miles per-year on average since new, the vast majority of which were recorded prior to the frame-off restoration.

Viewed from any angle, the exterior Polo Green Metallic paint is virtually perfect. This beautiful color selection highlights the curvaceous body lines with reflected light and deep color. The effect really is stunning. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) The painting process was fully documented in photos included with the car. All exterior chrome trim has been completely renewed and shows as-new: bumper trim and overriders, headlight and indicator-light trim, grille trim, hood trim, windshield trim, side mirror, door handles, lower-body trim, engine-compartment louvers, and taillight (and reflector) trim all shine with virtual perfection. The tan convertible-top boot (snaps included) is pristine, as is the Porsche crest emblem on the hood and the gold “Porsche 356C” lettering in the rear. The factory-original chromed, 10-slot, steel wheels (with full-color Porsche-crest emblems) are mounted with Yokohama® Avid Ascend tires. As but one evidence of the quality of the restoration work, the photos of the car’s rear bumper (with exhaust outlets integrated), teardrop taillights, engine-cover vents, center backup light, and the beautifully curvy rear bodywork capture this triumph of classic-Porsche renewal. The front trunk is clean and complete including the leather hold-down strap for the spare tire.

The car’s interior has been restored to the same high standard. Tan (parchment) leather covers the perfectly trimmed and mounted door panels and the bucket (and rear jump) seats. All renewed in the restoration process, the appearance and feel of the materials is as-new. Floors and cabin walls are covered in matching carpeting (with correct black rubber matting), including on the rear panels on the jump seats. A 3-spoke, classic black steering wheel (with Porsche-crest center emblem) frames the original green-numeral, chrome bezeled instruments set in the Polo-green-painted metal dashboard. The dash center includes original heat and ventilation controls, a VDO® analog clock, and a blank Porsche panel over the radio location (allowing the next owner the choice of audio or no-audio). The shift lever for the 4-speed manual transmission is mounted on the floor.

Under the rear engine cover, the 1600-cc, horizontal 4-cylinder engine has been restored to the same standard as the balance of the car. All component surfaces are pristine and the engine bay is spotless. All factory stickers are correctly in place. Viewed from below, the chassis is complete, straight, and undamaged. The lower surfaces of the engine and transmission and the suspension components are visual focal points. Light surface rust is confined to the untreated metal on the exhaust system.

All factory-mounted information and identification tags remain in place. The sale includes the photo-documentation mentioned earlier as well as a host of spare parts and accessories pictured in the gallery.

While the more than 150 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this ’65 Porsche 356C in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

This last-year Porsche 356C is certain to be the star in any collection, anywhere in the world. We are honored to present it for sale.
