According to the original purchase contract, Clifford Heselton placed an order for a 1960 Porsche 356B Super Roadster from Raffay & Co. in Hamburg, Germany. By October 28, 1960, the Roadster boarded Norton from Hamburg, Germany, and was U.S. bound to Sunnyvale, California. Its first 1,000-mile service was completed by Pardee & Mozart Porsche/VW in Palo Alto, California. Under Mr. Heselton’s ownership, the Roadster was primarily serviced by Porsche dealers in Palo Alto, California, until 1980. By 1982, the Roadster traded hands to the second owner, Carl Bokelund, and later, the 356 was passed down to his son, Bobby, who had the engine rebuilt in October 2000 and maintained the 356 until 2013. In 2013, the 356 was offered for sale, and a compression test was performed to find excellent compression results.
In 2023, European Collectibles was offered the opportunity to purchase this 356; after inspecting this 356 and seeing all of its history, we determined that it was an excellent candidate for a full cosmetic restoration. The Roadster was repainted to its factory color of Aetna Blue. The paintwork, brightwork, and trim are all in pristine condition with excellent gaps and panel fit. The interior was completely reupholstered in Red using German materials, including leather front seats, Roadster door panels, the dash as recovered, German square weave carpets, a black canvas convertible top, and a black canvas boot cover. The original 3-spoke VDM steering wheel and VDO instrumentation have been restored. Date-coded Lemmerz 4½” x 15” chrome wheels wear Super hubcaps and are fitted to Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Lastly, the undercarriage was stripped down to bare metal and recoated using a factory German undercoat, and the suspension components were detailed.
Mechanically, powered by its matching number drive train with a 1600cc flat-four Super engine (Type 616/2) producing 75 horsepower paired to a 4-speed manual transmission (Type 714) and a four-wheel drum braking system. Offered with the original purchase invoice, original importation documentation, California registration cards from 1961-1996, German import tax card, Certificate of Authenticity, Owner’s Manual, Operating Instructions for the opening and closing of the Roadster top, and 57 years of service records. An exceptional opportunity to purchase a 356B Super Signal Grill Roadster with original documentation and restored to full show condition.
