Ordering a new car is always a special experience, ordering a new Porsche even more so! Combine that with Tourist Delivery in Zuffenhausen and you have the makings of Richard Weston Caughlan’s summer of 1962. According to a digital copy of the Kardex warranty card on file, Caughlan would place an order through his local Bay Area VW-Porsche dealership for a Ruby Red over Black 60-horsepower 356 Coupe optioned with a driver’s side door mirror. Caughlan, along with his wife Marcella, arrived in Stuttgart in mid-July. A rare windshield inspection sticker that remains with the car indicates their Ruby Red Coupe was waiting for them in the delivery area with an inspection date of 4 July. Upon delivery, the car was given oval Zuffenhausen tourist plates “328 Z-4815.“ After enjoying the car over the weekend in Germany, paperwork shows Caughlan purchased a chrome luggage rack and leather straps, very useful additions, with their plans to head to England during their European trip. The couple and their 356 arrived in Dover on the 17th. On the 20th both the Kardex and paperwork from AFN Ltd. show that the car received an inspection and lubrication with 623 miles on the odometer. After touring the U.K. for the next few weeks, the car was transported to San Francisco aboard P&O-Orient Lines‘ SS Orsova.
The Ruby Red 356 remained with Caughlan’s in Los Altos, California, until 1988. The second owner notes that the car was acquired from Caughlan’s son in law. What he received with the car was nothing short of remarkable. Along with nearly all of the paperwork involved with the purchase of the car, it retained its German tourist plates issued in late 1962. The Coupe’s second owner would retain the car until 2024 with it remaining in California from 1962 until 2007. In 1992, the car was repainted in its original shade of Ruby Red with further body repairs occurring in the mid-2000s. In 2005, the 1,600-cc flat-four was rebuilt with a 1,750 cc “Big Bore” kit along with Weber carburetors and a Bursch exhaust and a transmission rebuild at the same time with regular maintenance provided by Zotz at Proshop.
This highly desirable 356 B “T6” 1600 Coupe is offered appearing very much as did when the Caughlans first accepted delivery in Stuttgart 63 years ago. A rare two-owner example, it features many irreplaceable delivery items and benefits from enhanced performance from its 1,750-cc engine. It is accompanied by a digital copy of the factory Kardex confirming its original build specification, along with the original service book and owner’s manual.
