Quite an accomplishment when Ferry Porsche -son of founder Ferdinand Porsche- designed the sporty 356 model in 1948. Based on the Volkswagen Beetle, designed by his father as a popular people’s car. In a time when many other car manufacturers used larger engines to deliver performance, Ferry Porsche focused on the aerodynamics, balance and lightweight to achieve the same goals.
During its build years (1948-1965), technological innovations continued, which contributed to its motorsport success and popularity. There were several body styles and engine versions available for the 356. The power output of the 4-cylinder air-cooled boxer engine was improved significantly. The displacement was increased from 1300 to 1600 cc and power was doubled to 60 hp, 75 hp for the Super version and even 95 hp for the last ‚SC‘ series.
