I am dealing in 356’s for decades now. Have seen some pretty well documented cars but this particular example is next level.
It all starts with a letter in June 1958 to a Dutch grey market dealer called Mr. Dijkgraaf.
In this letter Mr. Welch (first owner of this 356) requested for an used Porsche or Volkswagen. Mr. Dijkgraaf did not have one but offered him this new 356 A model for 2840 USD. They agreed and from that moment everything is documented. From the bill of sale until the Holland Amerika Lijn (shipping) invoice for bringing it to Los Angeles. This is all sorted out in a big binder. Just amazing.
The car had 3 private owners:
- 1958-1999 USA
- 1999-2008 USA
- Imported to Germany by a dealer
- 2010-2023 Germany
Condition
Body and paint
The preservation of this 356 is just unique. Zero rust and never had rust. All factory panels and perfect gaps all around. They won’t come any nicer!
Paint
This is so special! A nearly complete original paint 356 A. One bumper is repainted and some minor touch ups. All the rest is factory original and 65 years old! It has some patina and some traces of uses but that makes it even nicer in my opinion.
Interior
This 356 was bought for driving! It has a total of nearly 200.000 documented miles! For this reason the seats and doorcards are once reupholstered a while ago. All the rest is original The original doorcards and seat upholstery comes with the car.
Technical
Never restored cars are the best drivers. This is the best example. Drives superb. The matching numbers engine runs so smooth.
The matching numbers gearbox is precisely in every gear. Good synchros.
This lovely original 356 comes with:
- Kardex
- Owner history since day one
- Service history
- Toolkit
- German registration
- Original keys
- jack and spare
