At the launch of the 993, only the 911 coupe was available. The Carrera was born in a context of savings at Porsche and continued its career without any significant aesthetic evolution until the model was discontinued in 1998.
However, one year after the launch, the 993 Carrera 2WD is declined in a convertible. But the real surprise came in 1995, when the 911 revived the Targa tradition. It even innovates with a panoramic sliding glass roof. This concept, very practical, provides an exceptional brightness in the cabin.
This same year, the 993 Carrera 2 knows an evolution of power and climbs 285 hp 6100 rpm for a torque of 340 Nm å 5250 rpm (engine type M64 21/22/23/24). These versions can be recognized externally by their more rectangular exhaust outlet. The 13 horses gained are mainly due to the contribution of the Varioram, system patented by Porsche acting on the length of the tubes of admission according to the engine speed. At 4850 and above 5840 rpm, the electronic management system adapts the intake by selecting the ideal pipe for the current rpm and by controlling a valve that modifies the resonance. The interest is to generate a quasi-optimal tuning of the waves generated by the air flows and to make the filling rate optimal over a wider range. It is worth noting that Porsche got rid of the VarioRam on the 996, preferring to modulate the plenum volumes to smooth the torque curve (Variocam). A new hydraulically operated clutch also makes its appearance, making gear shifting easier.
The Carrera S completes the 911 coupe with the „turbo look“ of the 993 Carrera 4S. This includes a sportier spoiler and rocker panels, a specific engine hood, a lowered ride height and the 18″ 5-spoke hollow wheels of the 993 turbo. It’s important to note that the Carrera „2S“ had the same chassis as the Carrera Turbo, including the wide tracks and big brakes, while the Carrera 4S had the same chassis as the normal Carrera. Therefore, the installation of the 18″ rims required the use of 30 mm spacers to compensate for the narrower track width of the Turbo. With no extra power and 30 kilos more weight, this is actually bad for the performance, which hardly exceeds that of a 993 272 HP… But as far as seduction is concerned, it’s a no-brainer!
