An iconic classic that for many “typifies” the 911. The 964 was born in 1989 and rolled off the assembly line in Stuttgart until 1995. According to Porsche, the 964 was over 85% different from its predecessor! By the way, it was also the first where the term Carrera 4 was used, something referring to the all-wheel drive. Much safer and more predictable for the domestic driver, a little less so for the purist. Similarly, ours was ordered with rear-wheel drive. Well, the Carrera 2 was potent enough, though the 964 seemed to be designed based on the Turbo. Much wider hips, with the Porsche still looking much nicer. However, the Turbo was almost twice as expensive; So many a customer went home with a “slim” 964 under mild protest.
Since 1939, there was a banker family in Pfaffenhausen that was crazy about cars. So crazy, in fact, that the father of the house decided to convert the bank building in Pfaffenhausen into a garage. Thus autohaus RUF was born. With a company bus, the former banker was driving around, when he was overtaken by a Porsche 356. This lost control in front of his bus and overturned twice. Mr. RUF took the gentleman in question to the hospital and bought the -crumpled- 356. After the 356 was totally refurbished -and modified here and there-, Mr. RUF drove the Porsche for a year. Until they were driving in Stuttgart and were accosted on the street. The 356 was resold on the spot, at a profit. From there, Mr. RUF picked up Porsche project after Porsche project to refurbish. And so, RUF Porsche was born! Ours, along with some others, got the iconic BBL from Pfaffenhausen.
