Although extremely fast, this BTR is exceptionally docile and can be used for everyday use if desired. It has been run at .08 bar of boost to ensure the engines longevity. The BTR marked the beginning of RUF as a manufacturer in its own right, establishing itself as the most highly regarded of all the Porsche tuning companies. The BTR was inspired by the FIA Group B regulations of the time, utilizing a 930 Turbo as a basis to compete with the fastest products from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche itself. The BTR was routinely regarded as the fastest accelerating road car at the time.

The BTR utilized a 930 turbo engine bored to 3.4 liters and then fitted with Mahle pistons, RUF 935-type camshafts, RUF intercooler and a larger KKK turbo. This resulted in a power output of 374 bhp. Various other modifications to the car included enhancements to the body and interior, RUF sport steering wheel, RUF gauges, RUF suspension, RUF specific 17-inch wheels, RUF front spoiler with oil-cooler, Fog lights, RUF quad-pipe sport muffler, and a RUF five-speed gearbox. This particular BTR is equipped with the G50/50, only available for the 1989 model year 911 Turbo.
