When Porsche introduced the Turbo in 1975 it became the first manufacturer to offer a turbo charged sportscar. Based on the 3 litres Carrera engine the power was increased to 260 bhp giving a performance that even the Italian supercars had difficulties to match. With the wide body and not least the now famous Turbo Wing the model quickly became an icon of style and a success was created. With the 1978 model Porsche improved the car, which now had a 3,3 litres engine with intercooler producing 300 bhp. The car was exceptionally fast and to match the power new 4 piston ventilated disc brakes origined from the famous 917 model were installed. Porsche kept the original 4 speed gearbox, which at that time was the only transmission strong enough to cope with the huge momentum from the engine.
