The status of „der Elfer“ is just about indestructible. Since the introduction of the Porsche 911 in 1963, then called 901, we are 8 (!) generations further of this iconic sports car. After the archetypal model, the 911 Classic, the turbocharged 930 is the oldest of the bunch. Also known as the G-model, this generation is to this day one of the most successful Elfers ever. Production began in 1977 and continued for a whopping 15 years – including interim model updates in 84. However, there are more reasons why successors 964 and 993 could not match the popularity of the 2nd series. What about the equally famous and infamous Turbo aka the „widowmaker“? On paper, our atmospheric ‚930 Carrera is less dangerous than the first blown 911 in the brand’s history. But that doesn’t make it any less delicious….
Design & equipment
Some claim that the design of the Porsche 911 has remained virtually unchanged in 60 years. We think that is going a bit far, however it is clear that the DNA is still visible. For example, in the form of the unmistakable coupe silhouette, with its sharply sloping roofline. The round headlights have also evolved considerably over the years, but have remained largely intact. And what about the continuous red „band“ connecting the taillight units? Our G model got the scoop! Also typical of this generation are the thick black plastic rims and thickening on the bumpers including harmonica design at the front. Eye for detail? Well spotted: this example includes real headlight washers and recessed fog lamps in the front bumper; the latter are characteristic of the 2nd series G models. The dark blue bodywork looks super chic and shines like never before thanks to a high-quality polish. So do the rim edges of the – on modern Elfers still immensely popular – Fuchs wheels. The spokes themselves are black in color; a nice match with ditto exterior details such as the Carrera lettering on the rear hood. Remarkably, Porsche has matched the leather upholstery in color to the bodywork. Even the dashboard does not escape a blue finish; a relief among all those black decked out cockpits. The gear knob of the manual transmission and the instrument panel, with its 5 round counters and gauges fraternally side by side, are finished in black for a change.
Technology
The technology was not tampered with for 15 years. We understand that with 231 hp of atmospheric 6-cylinder boxer power at the rear wheels. Our Carrera 3.2 still features an old-fashioned air-cooled power source. And that can be heard! Indeed, the 0-100 km/h sprint within 6.1 seconds is accompanied by typical 911 gurgling. This is how a real Elfer should sound! Via a 5-speed manual transmission, the Coupe races toward a top speed of 245 km/h. And although the wide rear end is less „loose“ than that of the 930 aka the Turbo, it is definitely beware when the classic Porsche steps aside. Big men’s toys this vehicle is also called. Well, you must have a big heart when you carry so much character with you…
