The last 1966 chassis, from #304703 to #304955 have been set aside for special treatment by Porsche. However, all these cars are presented as 1967 models. According to some unofficial sources, these chassis were used to homologate improvements to the future 911 S, the first models of which were on 1967 chassis, starting with number #305001. Others claim that it was a marketing operation to sell off the last 1966 chassis, which were struggling to sell with the imminent arrival of the 1967 911 S. The last 1966 chassis, from #304703 to #304955 have been set aside for special treatment by Porsche. However, all these cars are presented as 1967 models. According to some unofficial sources, these chassis were used to homologate improvements to the future 911 S, the first models of which were on 1967 chassis, starting with number #305001.

Others claim that it was a marketing operation to sell off the last 1966 chassis, which were struggling to sell with the imminent arrival of the 1967 911 S.

On the official side, Porsche did acknowledge the existence of this special series, but never gave any further details about its history.

 

What you need to know is that R.S. stands for Rundenschreiben. This series of 911s is not the origin of the RS acronym that we’ve known since 1973 with the 911 2.7 RS, which stands for RennSport.

 

It’s impossible to tell the difference between a 911 DeLuxe R.S. and a classic 911 from the same year. The only evidence of this very special series is the Kardex, which bears a handwritten note: ‘Modell 1967 911 DeLuxe R.S. Ex 13/66’. All 253 Kardexes were written by the same hand.

 

 

What you need to know is that R.S. stands for Rundenschreiben. This series of 911s is not the origin of the RS acronym that we’ve known since 1973 with the 911 2.7 RS, which stands for RennSport.

Condition:

General: This R.S. DeLuxe is in generally good condition. Several modifications were made during its life, including an engine preparation, but also a tripmaster with a view to historic competition.

 

Exterior: #304771 rolled off the production line in #6604 Light Ivory.

The car was subsequently repainted in its current tangerine colour. The paintwork is of the period, with a few blemishes and gravel impacts.

 

Interior: The interior is in excellent condition. The original imitation leathers are in particularly good condition, tightly stretched with no discolouration or tears. The dashboard is also in excellent condition, as are the carpets. All the instruments are functional. The 4-point roll bar is original (Sport Purpose Programm), as are the seats.

 

 

Mechanics :

ENGINE :

This engine still has its original aluminium block from the first 911 / 2.0 models. It is type 901/01 with serial number 908014. Like all 2.0s, it had a displacement of 1991 cm3, with cylinders of 80, a stroke of 66 and valves of 42 and 38. At the end of production for the 1966 model year, the last 253 chassis produced were given the name RS Deluxe, with various modifications to the standard engine depending on the car, in particular the fitting of Webers and camshafts (Sport kit) as a preview of the 911 S. In 1966, Porsche launched the Sport Purpose Program or Factory Sport Kit to improve its engines and homologate parts for use in competitions or on future 911 S models.

This engine had already been improved with parts from the SPORT KIT, as we saw when it was completely rebuilt:

– Weber IDAS carburettors from the SPORT KIT, which will equip the first series of 911 S (and not the IDS of later S versions).

– Camshafts from the SPORT KIT, which would become the 911 S produced from August 1966.

– Spaghetti exhausts (3×1)

 

This engine, already of the 170 HP Sport type (customer competition), has been further improved by a configuration similar to that of the short-stroke 1969 911 ST competition, giving it a displacement of 2,530 cm3 thanks to :

– 90 high-compression pistons (10.5)

– Original 2.0 crankshaft with 66 stroke, controlled deflection, lightened and balanced with its flywheel and reinforced clutch mechanism

– Valves: 46×40

– Weber IDAS carburettors from KIT SPORT, but with large venturi

– Its KIT SPORT camshaft, with reinforced valve springs

– Polished and weighted connecting rods

– Reinforced oil pump

 

 

Stainless steel spaghetti exhausts in 42 mm diameter

The engine has been completely rebuilt in 2019 in line with these specifications, while also being upgraded with a 123 electronic ignition system.

(Estimated power + 200 CV).

 

GEARBOX :

The box is also its original box, type 902/1 numbered 231532, it has a different gearing from the standard versions with a shorter and closer racing staging and a torque of 7:31

– short first gear: 12.34

– 2, 3 and 4 close together

– fifth long: 28.23

 

From the 1966 model year onwards, this special gearbox configuration (typical of Rally and Hill Climb cars) was available from the PORSCHE ‘gear ratio on request’ catalogue.

Completely overhauled and refurbished in 2018, its efficiency has been further improved thanks to a new Quaife-type limited-slip autoblocker.
