Porsche 911 S Coupé, 1970

The 1970 911 S displays the steady improvement that Porsche imparted to its highest-performance sports car. The wheelbase of the 911 had been extended by some 2.5 inches the year before, providing better balance and handling. With its engine output now increased to a potent 180 horsepower, thanks to larger valves and better breathing, a larger, 225-millimeter clutch was required. Interior fittings were upgraded as well, with a new steering wheel lock and instruments now mounted in rubber rings. Externally, new door handles of a safer design replaced the earlier pushbutton type, and the cars were delivered with full factory undercoating for the first time. Stopping power was provided by 11.1-inch ventilated front and 11.4-inch ventilated rear disc brakes, which proved more than enough for a 2,400-pound car. It was also capable of accelerating to 60 mph from a standstill in just over seven seconds, 100 mph in just 20 seconds, and reaching a top speed of 144 mph. Few cars of its day were capable of matching its exhilarating performance.

Das Fahrzeug im Detail

It would be difficult to find a nicer 1970 Porsche 911 S than the example presented here, the 1643 st of only 1,744 built for the 1970 model year.. It was discovered by the previus owners complete and undamaged in a North Italian garage, where it remained for 20 years. Soon after purchase, it was completely stripped to a bare tub and rebuilt to factory specifications over a two-year period by a renowned marque specialist. The work included a high-quality repaint in the car’s original 018 tangerine, while the suspension and other components were powder-coated. The interior was in preserved condition like Porsche made in 1970, the aluminum trim was polished, and the original tinted glass was reinstalled.

Mechanically, the original, matching-numbers, 2,195-cubic centimeter Type 911/02 flat-six engine and Type 911/01 transaxle were completely overhauled, and the engine compartment was detailed to its factory appearance. The 6×15 Fuchs forged alloy wheels were polished and repainted, and suspension parts, such as the shock absorbers, tie-rod ends, ball joints, and bushings, were replaced, as needed, with correct new parts.

This fine example of a highly sought-after model is supplied with its correct spare tire and wheel, tool kit, owner’s manual, and photographic file of renovation.
