Koenig-Specials emerged from one enthusiast’s pursuit of automotive excellence in the late 1970s. After acquiring an early Ferrari 365 GT4 BB in West Germany, professional racing driver and 1962 German Hillclimbing Champion Willy Koenig found the factory performance lacking. He embarked on a comprehensive development program to enhance both the performance and the visual presence of his new Berlinetta Boxer. What began as a private endeavor quickly attracted attention from other Ferrari owners, who commissioned Koenig to apply similar modifications to their cars. This organic growth led to the establishment of a specialized tuning house that expanded its expertise to encompass vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar, and Lamborghini, and would shape the landscape of high-performance vehicle modification throughout the 1980s and beyond.
In 1987, Koenig undertook an ambitious project focused on improving the 930-generation Porsche 911 Turbo, undeterred by its sobering moniker the „widowmaker“ for its unforgiving handling characteristics at the limit. Dubbed the Road Runner, the Turbo’s radical visual transformation began with an extensive fiberglass body kit that redefined the G-body’s iconic silhouette. The distinctive front end incorporated Porsche 928 headlights and bespoke side mirrors, while the rear featured Audi 200 Turbo taillights integrated into a redesigned fascia with a pronounced wraparound spoiler.
Mechanical upgrades were equally thorough. The Road Runner retained the Turbo’s factory cross-drilled, ventilated brake system, now bolstered with Bilstein shock absorbers, reinforced anti-roll bars, and a front strut brace for enhanced rigidity. The original 3.3-liter flat-six was equipped with twin turbochargers and an improved air-to-air intercooler system. Combined with a re-mapped ECU and a performance exhaust system, power output varied between 480 and 550 PS and could be controlled via a boost gauge inside the cabin, far exceeding the standard Turbo’s 231 PS.
This particular Koenig-Specials Road Runner began life on 29 October 1985 as a Guards Red over Champagne leather Turbo Coupe. Its factory options included a heavy-duty battery, limited-slip differential, electric passenger-side mirror, left & right sport seats with electric height adjustment, green-tinted windshield with green top tint band, and an electric adjustable sunroof. Following its Koenig-Specials transformation, it retained its factory Guards Red and Champagne color scheme, now enhanced by dramatic fiberglass aerodynamic elements and BBS Koenig BS wheels mounted with fresh Pirelli Cinturato P7 rubber.
Under current ownership the car was treated to an extensive engine-out service completed in January 2025 in preparation for the sale. Said to exceed $20,000, the work included rebuilding both turbochargers, installing a lightweight clutch/flywheel assembly and clutch cable, and replacing the rear & front main seals, aluminum charge pipes, heater tubes, spark plug wires, exhaust, and much more. Now offered with its odometer displaying 24,253 kilometers at the time of cataloging, this rare Koenig-Specials Road Runner represents a chance to own a thoroughly sorted example of one of the most unique creations to be born out of the performance modification scene of the 1980s.
