Alongside the late G series, the new generation 911 came onto the market with the 1989 model year. The 911 Carrera 4 of type 964 was made up of 85% new parts, but it largely retained the shapes classics of its predecessor. It was available in Coupe, Targa and Cabriolet body forms. Despite the many design similarities, the 964 had significantly better aerodynamics than the G model. The new rounded front and rear bumpers, as well as the automatically deploying rear wing contributed to this. The 911 Carrera 4 was the first 911 with all-wheel drive. Its electronically controlled permanent all-wheel drive normally distributed 31% of the torque to the front axle and 69% to the rear axle. Depending on the situation, the distribution could be carried out in a variable manner. Its 3.6 liter engine delivered a power of 250 hp. From MY 1990, the 911 Carrera 2 was available in an identically designed (rear) drive version (first model with Tiptronic) and, from MY 1991, a turbo version was also available.
