With the introduction of the 997, Porsche reverted to the old skool round headlight units. Predecessor 996 experimented with highly evolved ones, but the true Elfer purist soon longed for the old-fashioned Porsche character. Although, old-fashioned: behind them are „just“ bi-xenon lights. The pre-facelift version did not know anything about LED lighting. As far as we are concerned, the wider low beam and turn signal lights in the individual units underneath therefore fit the iconic Elfer design better than the ones on the 997.2. Furthermore, our Carrera S Coupe can be recognized by 4 exhaust tailpipes and 19-inch Carrera Classic rims. Unless black OZ wheels with ultra flat rubber around them appeal better to you. Either way, you have a view of red brake calipers that contrast brilliantly with the Schwarz bodywork. We can already reveal that they symbolize pure Porsche performance. But of course you already knew that.
Equipment
Sink into black leather (what else), fully electric seats and get a view of a wonderfully classically composed instrument panel: the 5 round, analog counters and gauges are arranged fraternally side by side as always. The silver background benefits readability. Especially the centrally positioned tachometer is something you want to keep an eye on, but the Sport Chrono timepiece from the Plus package of the same name also demands attention. Setting sharper lap times is of course only possible with a leather sports steering wheel that follows your steering commands with lightning speed. Check. You can also tick off automatic dimming mirrors, a rain sensor, Home-Link garage door opener and alcantara headliner including integrated electric sunroof. Options such as a Bose audio system, CD changer and Cruise Control come in handy more often than not, as the engine noise during fierce acceleration is many times more addictive. Diving even further into the technology, you will notice that the manual transmission features a shift path shortener, so that acceleration can be extra shortened….
Technique
Short was that sprint time anyway, because unlike its successors, the 6-speed manual transmission from our Porsche 911 Carrera S is faster than the Tiptronic automatic version. How much faster exactly? A whopping half a second between 0 and 100 km/h! Only 4.8 seconds takes the 355 hp 400 Nm strong 6-cylinder boxer engine to do it in total. The top speed of 293 km h is also significantly higher than the 285 km h of the version without a manual clutch. From his workshop in Uithoorn, specialist Rob Goossen saw to it that the technical health of the 997 S remained intact. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Stability Management (PSM), meanwhile, keep as much grip as possible on the fact that all power disappears toward the rear axle. But whether these systems can withstand your enthusiasm? There is only one way to find out….
