The 959 technology carrier was built on the basis of the 911 series in an exclusive series of 292 units. From the biturbo boxer engine with water-cooled 4-valve cylinder heads to the electronically controlled chassis and all-wheel drive system to the aerodynamically optimized body – Porsche demonstrated with it what was possible in automobile construction at the time. Despite its price of 420,000 deutschmarks, the 959 quickly sold out.
Because Porsche also wanted to demonstrate success in rallying after several victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 959 rally project was created in 1982, developed from the 911 SC in accordance with the then current Group B regulations of the FIA. This initially resulted in three extensively revised 911s with all-wheel drive, which traded as the 911 4×4 (or 953). The 959 was presented to the public at the 1983 IAA in Frankfurt.
In 1984, the Prodrive team took a surprise victory with a 911 4×4 (953) in the Paris-Dakar Rally under Frenchman René Metge. The 200 road-going models required for Group B homologation were ordered as early as this IAA, but due to the great complexity of the 959’s design, completion was delayed and it was not until 1987 that the first examples were delivered.
The 959 was built until 1988. There is contradictory information about the number of units. The number 288 is often quoted. Porsche itself gives the number 292 on its homepage, divided into 113 units in 1987 and 179 units in 1988. Most buyers chose the comfort version and few the lighter sports version.
