In 2011 a complete mechanical rebuild was performed by noted specialist, Bob Campbell of Auto Specialists in Canyon Country, CA. The engine was torn down and rebuilt with SC internals at a cost of over $17,000. Additional work was performed to the braking and fuel systems for an additional $25,000. A detailed receipt is on hand and available to anyone wanting to read the exact details. During this time, the original undercarriage was freshened up and it remains solid and presentable. The gearbox and clutch we gone through at this time and although it was just over ten years ago, there are only 3,000 miles on the rebuilds. The electrical system was upgraded to 12-volt, and everything is working fine, except for the tachometer (which is intermittent). The wheels are a correct combination of paint and chrome and are wearing 185/70/15 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires that were recently installed.
The exterior trim is in very good condition with re-chromed window frames, recent deco strips and exterior brightwork.
The interior is from Autos International and includes black leather on the seats, new padding, correct carpets and rubber mats along with headliner and door panels.
The above description is everything a buyer would want to read when shopping for a 356 – documented mechanical rebuilds by well-respected shop, interior redone with premium materials, matching numbers engine. However, where this car falls short of European Collectibles‘ standards is in the body and paint department. A body and paint restoration was attempted by an unknown shop in Florida and not only are they not very good painters, but they did they not get the color right either. They also didn’t repair the body in areas where it was needed. Unfortunately, we do not have the time in our schedule to redo this paintwork, so we are offering it at a very attractive price.
