Presented in August 1989, the new 964 perpetuates the eternal history of the Porsche 911. Thanks to its very successful line, the Porsche 964 becomes the emblematic model of the firm of Stuttgart at the end of the 80s. Made up of 85% new parts, it retains much of the classic shape of its predecessor, with more voluptuous features. Available in multiple Coupe, Targa and Cabriolet versions, it was obviously a commercial success for the brand.
Porsche aimed with the 964 to participate in the N/GT group. Derived from the Carrera 2, the 964 Carrera RS is developed in this direction. It is presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1990. 1000 copies must be produced at least, in the end it is 2,282 copies that will see the day. The electronic management and camshafts are modified, the body is lowered and hard springs are installed, but above all the weight is drastically reduced: the rear seats disappear, the windows and mirrors are manual, there is no soundproofing or power steering. The spoiler is mobile.
The 3.6L flat-6 engine of the Carrera RS develops 260 horsepower, which, coupled with the announced weight of 1,230 kg, promised a very respectable performance for the time, including a top speed of 261 km/h. The 100 km/h is reached in 5.3 seconds. The car is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. The brakes are ventilated with 4-piston calipers from Turbo at the front and from Carrera Cup at the rear.
